Freia Selskapssjokolade is a traditional dark cooking chocolate synonymous with Norwegian baking and culinary culture. Since its introduction, it has become a staple in Norwegian households for making cakes, desserts, and hot chocolate. The brand Freia was founded in Oslo, Norway, in 1889 and grew to be the country's most prominent chocolate manufacturer, famously operating out of the Rodeløkka district.
While the brand remains deeply rooted in its Norwegian heritage, it has undergone changes in corporate ownership over the decades. In 1993, Freia was acquired by the Nordic conglomerate Kraft General Foods (now Mondelez International). Today, the brand is owned by Mondelez International, one of the world's largest snacks and confectionery companies. Most Freia products, including Selskapssjokolade, continue to be produced at the historic Freia factory in Oslo, maintaining their local manufacturing origin despite global corporate ownership.
