Founded in Kyoto, Japan, in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, Nintendo began as a manufacturer of handmade Hanafuda playing cards. Over the decades, the company transformed from a small local business into a global leader in the interactive entertainment industry. Nintendo is credited with revitalizing the video game market in the mid-1980s with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and has since produced some of the most iconic franchises in history, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon.
Today, Nintendo remains headquartered in Kyoto and operates as a publicly traded corporation. While the creative design and engineering of their products take place in Japan, the physical manufacturing of hardware like the Switch console is primarily outsourced to partners in China and Vietnam to meet global demand. The brand remains under its own ultimate ownership, standing as a primary pillar of the gaming world with subsidiaries such as Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe managing regional distribution and operations.
