Its history dates back to June 13, 1731, when Peter Henckels registered the "Twin" (Zwilling) symbol with the Cutlers' Guild in Solingen, Germany. This makes it one of the oldest trademarked brands still in operation today. The company was later named after his descendant, Johann Abraham Henckels.

While the brand is deeply rooted in the German city of Solingen, known as the "City of Blades," its manufacturing footprint is global to leverage specialized craftsmanship and market accessibility. Premium forged knives are primarily manufactured in Solingen, Germany, and specialty lines are often produced in Seki, Japan. Entry-level products and various cookware lines are manufactured in other countries, including China, Spain, Belgium, and Italy, depending on the specific product category.

Since 1970, Zwilling J.A. Henckels has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Werhahn Group (Wilh. Werhahn KG), a family-owned German conglomerate. Under this ownership, the brand has expanded its portfolio significantly by acquiring other high-end culinary brands like Staub (France), Demeyere (Belgium), and Ballarini (Italy), solidifying its position as a global leader in high-performance kitchen equipment.
