OpenAI is a leading artificial intelligence research and deployment company founded in December 2015. Originally established as a non-profit organization in San Francisco, California, by a group including Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, the brand's primary mission was to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. In 2019, the organization transitioned into a 'capped-profit' structure to facilitate the massive capital required for large-scale computing and talent acquisition.
The development and 'manufacturing' of OpenAI's products, such as GPT-4, DALL-E, and Sora, occur primarily in the United States, utilizing extensive cloud computing infrastructure provided through a strategic partnership with Microsoft. While the intellectual property and core research originate in San Francisco, the computational power required to train and run these models is distributed across global data centers managed by its partners.
OpenAI remains a private company with a unique governance structure. Although Microsoft is a significant minority shareholder and key strategic partner with a massive multi-billion dollar investment, OpenAI is not a subsidiary of Microsoft. It remains governed by the OpenAI non-profit board, which oversees the capped-profit entity, OpenAI Global, LLC. This structure ensures that the brand maintains independence while accessing the resources necessary for cutting-edge AI development.
