OB is a globally recognized brand of tampons that was first developed in Germany in 1950. The brand name 'o.b.' is an abbreviation for the German phrase 'ohne Binde,' which translates to 'without pad.' The product was innovative for its time, designed by a gynecologist to be an applicator-free tampon that provided discrete and reliable protection.
Originally launched by the German company Carl Hahn GmbH, the brand grew significantly in popularity throughout Europe and North America. In 1974, the brand was acquired by the American multinational Johnson & Johnson, which helped expand its reach globally.
In early 2013, Edgewell Personal Care (formerly part of Energizer Holdings) acquired the rights to the OB brand in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Today, ownership of the brand is split: Edgewell Personal Care owns and manages the brand in North America, while Johnson & Johnson (through its consumer health spin-off, Kenvue) retains ownership of the brand in international markets, including Europe. Manufacturing takes place across various facilities globally to meet regional demand.
