Royal Robbins is a heritage brand deeply rooted in the American outdoor climbing culture of the 1960s. Founded by legendary rock climbers Liz and Royal Robbins, the brand was established in Modesto, California, out of a need for durable, functional, and stylish clothing that could withstand the rigors of Yosemite’s granite walls while remaining socially respectable for post-climb activities. The brand became famous for its iconic 'Billy Goat' short and has since expanded into a full range of technical and casual trekking apparel.
While the brand was born in the United States, its manufacturing operations currently span multiple countries across Asia and Europe to meet global demand and maintain technical material standards. The brand places a heavy emphasis on sustainability, utilizing recycled fibers and organic cotton to minimize its environmental footprint.
Ownership of Royal Robbins transitioned through various hands before being acquired by the Swedish outdoor powerhouse Fenix Outdoor International AG in 2018. This acquisition placed Royal Robbins alongside other prestigious outdoor brands such as Fjällräven and Hanwag, further solidifying its presence in the international market while maintaining its California-inspired design ethos.
