Purina is one of the most recognized names in pet care globally, with a history dating back to 1894 when William H. Danforth founded the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company. The brand became widely known as Ralston Purina in 1902, establishing itself as a leader in animal nutrition in the United States. Today, Purina Pro Plan is their premium line, developed through extensive research into feline and canine physiology.
In 2001, the Ralston Purina Company was acquired by the Swiss conglomerate Nestlé, resulting in the formation of Nestlé Purina PetCare. This merger combined Nestlé's global reach with Purina's expertise in pet health. While the brand originated in St. Louis, Missouri, where its North American headquarters remain, manufacturing occurs in advanced facilities worldwide to meet local demand. In the United States, major production hubs are located in Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, though specific product lines are also manufactured in specialized facilities in Europe and Asia.
