Goal Zero was founded in 2009 by Robert Workman after he developed portable solar power solutions for humanitarian work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The brand quickly became a pioneer in the portable power industry, specializing in solar panels and portable power stations designed for outdoor recreation, emergency backup, and off-grid living.
While the company's research, design, and engineering teams are located at its headquarters in Bluffdale, Utah, manufacturing is primarily conducted through specialized facilities in China to ensure global distribution and competitive pricing. The Yeti series represents their flagship line of zero-emission portable power stations, utilizing advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery technology for high performance and longevity.
In 2014, Goal Zero was acquired by NRG Energy, a major American energy company. Since then, it has operated as a key subsidiary under NRG, leveraging larger corporate resources to expand its reach in the renewable energy and home backup sectors. Despite the acquisition, the brand maintains its distinct identity focused on portable solar-integrated power ecosystems.
