Purina Pro Plan is a high-performance pet food brand that traces its lineage back to the founding of the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company in 1894, which later became the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, Missouri. The 'Pro Plan' line was introduced in the 1980s as the first of its kind to use real meat as the primary ingredient, catering to the specific nutritional needs of show dogs and active pets.

In 2001, the Nestlé S.A. corporation acquired Ralston Purina for $10.3 billion, merging it with its own Friskies PetCare Company to form Nestlé Purina PetCare. This merger created one of the world's largest pet food manufacturers. Today, while the brand's heritage is deeply rooted in the United States, it is manufactured in various facilities globally to serve local markets, including major operations in Mexico and Latin America, overseen by the Swiss-based ultimate parent company, Nestlé.
