Winston is a globally recognized brand of cigarettes that was introduced in 1954 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in the United States. Named after Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the 'City of Arts and Innovation' where the company was headquartered, it became one of the first filter-tipped cigarettes to achieve massive commercial success. By the mid-1960s, it was the best-selling cigarette brand in the world, famously marketed with the slogan 'Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.'
Today, the ownership of the Winston brand is split geographically. In the United States, it is owned and manufactured by ITG Brands, a subsidiary of the British multinational Imperial Brands. Internationally, however, the brand was acquired by Japan Tobacco (JT) in 1999 as part of its purchase of RJR Nabisco's non-U.S. tobacco operations. Consequently, Winston's international business is managed by Japan Tobacco International (JTI), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Manufacturing occurs in numerous facilities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas to serve local markets.
