Discover where a brand or product originates
Founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, Suunto originated when the Finnish adventurer invented a method for mass-producing liquid-filled compasses. The brand grew to become a global leader in precision instruments, expanding from field compasses into diving computers and eventually high-tech GPS sports watches. For decades, it was a cornerstone of Finnish industrial design and engineering.
While the brand maintains a strong "Made in Finland" identity—with many of its flagship products still hand-crafted at its headquarters in Vantaa—manufacturing is also supported by global supply chains. The brand's ownership has transitioned through major sporting conglomerates over the years. Originally independent, it was long a part of Amer Sports (alongside brands like Salomon and Wilson).
In recent years, the brand entered a new chapter regarding its corporate structure. In 2022, Amer Sports completed the sale of Suunto to Liesheng, a Chinese technology company specializing in smart wearables. This acquisition aimed to combine Suunto’s heritage in precision outdoor instruments with Liesheng’s technological capabilities in the consumer electronics sector, while maintaining Suunto's operations in Finland.
