Virginia Woolf is a pioneering figure of 20th-century modernist literature, best known for her innovative use of stream of consciousness and her profound exploration of the interior lives of her characters. Her brand, as a literary entity, originated in the United Kingdom during the early 20th century, specifically tied to the Bloomsbury Group.

Originally, her works were published by Hogarth Press, an independent publishing house she co-founded with her husband, Leonard Woolf, in 1917. This allowed the couple to maintain complete creative and editorial control over her novels, essays, and diaries. Today, the intellectual property and rights to her works are largely in the public domain in many jurisdictions, but the 'Hogarth' imprint continues to exist as a modern brand.

Starting in 1946, Hogarth Press became an associate of Chatto & Windus, and through a series of mergers, it eventually became part of the Random House Group. In 2013, a mega-merger joined Penguin and Random House, placing the legacy of the Hogarth brand under the umbrella of Penguin Random House, which is ultimateley owned by the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann. Production and printing of her books occur in various countries globally to serve international educational and consumer markets.
