Knirps is a world-renowned brand celebrated for inventing the folding umbrella. The brand's history dates back to 1928 when Hans Haupt, a German engineer who suffered from a leg injury that made carrying a walking stick and a full-sized umbrella cumbersome, developed the first telescopic frame. This innovation revolutionized rain protection and established Knirps as a symbol of high-quality, durable pocket umbrellas.
Today, while the brand remains deeply rooted in German engineering and design standards, most of its commercial manufacturing takes place in China to reach global markets efficiently. However, specialized lines and high-end design development continue to be managed and sometimes assembled within Germany to maintain the brand’s premium status.
In terms of ownership, Knirps became part of a joint venture and was later integrated under the stewardship of the Austrian-German company doppler. This partnership solidified the brand's position in the international market, combining Knirps' legacy with doppler's extensive manufacturing and distribution network. The brand continues to focus on technical excellence, utilizing wind-tunnel testing and premium materials to ensure its products remain the benchmark for portable umbrellas.
