Blue Mountain coffee is globally recognized as one of the most prestigious and expensive coffees in the world. Its origin is strictly regulated, produced exclusively in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica, which offers a unique combination of high altitude, volcanic soil, and consistent rainfall. The brand 'Blue Mountain' is a protected geographical indication, ensuring that any beans sold under this name must be certified by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA).

Originally developed under the British colonial administration in the 18th century, the coffee industry in Jamaica was later consolidated under various local boards. Today, while many private estates and cooperatives produce and export the beans, the Jamaican government maintains strict oversight to preserve the brand's integrity. Ownership of specific labels and estates is fragmented among local Jamaican families and international investors, particularly from Japan, which has historically imported the vast majority of the annual harvest.
