Sanuk was founded in July 1997 by Jeff Kelley in Southern California. The brand name is derived from the Thai word for 'fun,' reflecting its mission to create unconventional and comfortable footwear that spreads smiles. Sanuk gained significant popularity for its 'Sidewalk Surfers,' which effectively created a new category of footwear by blending a sandal base with a shoe upper.
In 2011, the brand was acquired by Deckers Outdoor Corporation, a major global player in the footwear industry. Under Deckers' ownership, Sanuk has expanded its retail presence and commitment to sustainable materials, incorporating hemp, recycled materials, and bio-based foams into its product lines.
While the brand's creative and administrative heart remains in California, manufacturing is carried out through global supply chains typical of large footwear conglomerates. Production primarily occurs in specialized factories across Asia, including China and Vietnam, to meet international demand while maintaining the brand's signature 'fun-and-functional' design ethos.
