Mavic, an acronym for Manufacture d'Articles Vélocipédiques Idoux et Chanel, is one of the most storied names in the cycling industry. Founded in Lyon, France, the brand became legendary for its technical innovations, particularly the invention of the eyeleted rim and the introduction of the first aerodynamic disc wheel. For decades, Mavic has been synonymous with professional racing, most notably through its iconic yellow neutral support vehicles in the Tour de France.
The brand has undergone significant ownership changes in the 21st century. After being part of the Salomon Group and later Amer Sports, it faced a period of financial restructuring. In 2020, Mavic was acquired by the Bourrelier Group, a French family-owned investment firm. This acquisition aimed to return Mavic to its roots as a family-led French enterprise with a focus on high-end engineering and European manufacturing.
Today, Mavic continues to design its products in Annecy, France. While wheel assembly and component production are centered in Europe—specifically at their own facilities in France and longstanding partner sites in Romania—some apparel and global distribution are handled through specialized international channels. The brand remains a leader in rim technology and wheel-tire systems for road, mountain, and gravel cycling.
