Spontex is one of the most recognized brands in the global household cleaning market, particularly famous for its cellulose sponges and scouring pads. The brand traces its origins back to 1932 in Beauvais, France, when it was established by the company Spontex SA. The name itself is a portmanteau of the words 'sponge' and 'textile', reflecting its original innovation in merging natural materials with industrial efficiency.

Over the decades, Spontex became a household name across Europe, frequently identified by its iconic hedgehog mascot (Ernie the Hedgehog in the UK). While the brand maintains a very strong manufacturing presence in France, where it originates, its production is part of a wider international network to supply global markets.

The brand has undergone several corporate ownership changes. For many years, it was part of the French company Hutchinson (a subsidiary of TotalEnergies). In 2010, it was acquired by the American consumer goods giant Jarden Corporation, which later merged with Newell Brands. Following a period under Newell Brands, the Spontex brand—along with Mapa—was acquired in 2022 by Freudenberg Home and Cleaning Solutions, a division of the German-headquartered Freudenberg Group, which also owns the competing Vileda brand. This move solidified Freudenberg's position as a dominant leader in the European cleaning tools sector.
