Valvoline is a historic American brand recognized as the creator of the world's first branded motor oil. Founded in 1866 by Dr. John Ellis, the company has been at the forefront of automotive lubrication technology for over 150 years. Initially developed to lubricate the valves of large steam engines, the brand evolved alongside the internal combustion engine to become a global leader in automotive chemicals.
Today, Valvoline's corporate structure is divided into two distinct entities following a significant divestiture. The retail automotive services (quick-lube) business operates as Valvoline Inc., based in the United States. However, the global products division—which manufactures and sells the motor oil and automotive fluids found on retail shelves—was acquired by the Saudi Arabian energy giant Aramco in early 2023. This acquisition integrated Valvoline Global Operations into Aramco’s massive downstream portfolio.
Manufacturing for Valvoline occurs across a global network of blending plants and distribution centers to serve international markets. While a significant portion of its production remains in the United States to serve the North American market, the brand also maintains manufacturing facilities and licensed production agreements in Europe, Asia, and South America to meet local specifications and demands.
