The MG HS is a compact crossover SUV that represents the modern era of the storied Morris Garages (MG) brand. While the nameplate traces its roots back to 1920s Britain as a manufacturer of sporty open-top cars, the brand underwent a massive transformation in the 21st century. The HS model specifically debuted in 2018 as a successor to the GS, designed to compete in the increasingly popular global SUV segment with a focus on technology and value.
Today, the manufacturing of the MG HS is centered in China under the direction of SAIC Motor, one of the world's largest automotive conglomerates. To support its international expansion, SAIC has established regional assembly plants in countries like Thailand (through a joint venture with CP Group) and Indonesia. This localized production strategy allows the brand to cater more effectively to the specific needs of South Asian and European markets where the MG brand has seen a significant resurgence.
The ownership of MG is currently held by SAIC Motor, a Chinese state-owned automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Shanghai. SAIC acquired the rights to the MG brand following the collapse of the MG Rover Group in the mid-2000s and subsequent mergers. Under SAIC's stewardship, MG has shifted from a niche British sports car maker to a high-volume global brand specializing in electric vehicles (EVs) and modern internal combustion SUVs like the HS.
