Winston is a historic American cigarette brand that has grown into one of the most recognized tobacco names worldwide. Originally launched in 1954 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, it quickly rose to prominence, becoming the best-selling cigarette in the United States by the mid-1960s.
Today, the ownership of Winston is split geographically due to major corporate acquisitions. Within the United States, the brand is owned and manufactured by ITG Brands, a subsidiary of the British company Imperial Brands. However, for all international markets including Germany (where the pictured pack is from, identified by the German health warnings), the brand is owned by Japan Tobacco International (JTI).
Manufacturing for the European market is spread across several locations. While JTI operates a large facility in Trier, Germany, products for the German market are also frequently produced in JTI's factories in Poland, Romania, or Greece to optimize regional distribution.
