Illy, officially known as illycaffè S.p.A., is a world-renowned Italian coffee roasting company and brand specializing in the production of espresso. It was founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy in the port city of Trieste, Italy. Francesco was an innovator who invented the first automatic coffee machine and a revolutionary packaging system based on pressurization, which allowed for the initial international export of the coffee while preserving its aroma and freshness.
The brand's manufacturing remains deeply rooted in its hometown, with a single high-tech production plant located in Trieste that processes and packages coffee for global distribution. While the coffee beans are sourced from multiple regions globally—specifically the world's best Arabica plantations in Brazil, Central America, India, and Africa—the unique blending and roasting process that defines the "illy taste" occurs almost exclusively in Italy to maintain strict quality standards.
As of 2024 and beyond, illycaffè remains a family-controlled business, a rarity among major global coffee conglomerates. The Illy family maintains majority ownership, although in 2021, the private equity firm Rhone Capital acquired a minority 20% stake to help accelerate the brand's expansion, particularly in the United States and digital markets. The company is currently led by members of the third generation of the family, ensuring the brand maintains its commitment to the quality and sustainability principles established by its founder.
