Chocolat Frey is a flagship Swiss chocolate brand that represents one of the most significant pillars of the country's confectionery heritage. Founded in 1887 by the Frey brothers, Robert and Max, the company has maintained its reputation for over a century by strictly adhering to Swiss-made quality standards. Unlike many other global chocolate brands that have outsourced production, Frey continues to manufacture its products primarily at its dedicated facility in Buchs, Switzerland. This commitment to local production ensures that the brand maintains its authentic 'Swiss Made' status, which is highly regulated and valued worldwide.
The history of the brand is deeply intertwined with the development of the Swiss retail landscape. In 1950, Chocolat Frey was acquired by Migros, Switzerland's largest retail corporation and one of the world's most successful cooperatives. This acquisition transformed Frey from a family business into the exclusive chocolate producer for Migros, helping it become the number one chocolate brand in the Swiss market by volume. Today, while it is widely known as a supermarket brand within Switzerland, it also exports to over 50 countries, positioning itself as a premium Swiss treat internationally.
Currently, the brand is owned by the Migros Group through its industrial subsidiary, Delica AG. Migros operates as a cooperative, meaning it is owned by its more than two million members (customers), making the ultimate ownership structure unique in the global food industry. Frey remains a symbol of Swiss tradition, balancing high-volume retail distribution with the meticulous craftsmanship associated with Swiss chocolate making.
