Holden, originally known as Holden & Frost, began its journey in 1856 as a saddlery and leather goods manufacturer in Adelaide, South Australia. Transitioning into the automotive landscape in the early 20th century, the company initially focused on motorcycle sidecars and vehicle body building. It established a significant partnership with General Motors (GM) during the 1920s, which culminated in a full merger in 1931 to form General Motors-Holden's Ltd.

For decades, Holden was an icon of Australian industry, famously producing 'Australia's Own Car' with the launch of the 48-215 model in 1948. While predominantly manufactured in Australian plants such as Elizabeth and Fishermans Bend for most of its history, domestic production ceased in October 2017. Following the end of local manufacturing, Holden products were imported from GM facilities in the United States, South Korea, Thailand, and Germany. In February 2020, General Motors announced the retirement of the Holden brand, effectively ending its commercial presence by the end of 2021.
