This vintage skateboard is a rare piece from the early days of street skating, produced by Shutdown Skates. Founded in 1986 by Rodney Smith and Bruno Musso in New York, Shutdown was one of the first brands to represent the gritty, urban skate scene of the East Coast. This specific deck features the iconic graphic of Malcolm X 'By All Means Necessary', a hallmark of the brand's socially conscious and rebellious identity in the late 1980s.
The manufacturing of these early Shutdown boards was typically done in the United States, utilizing traditional maple wood construction. Following internal changes, Shutdown's founders later launched the legendary brand Zoo York in 1993. Although the original Shutdown company ceased its initial operations, its historical value remains significant for collectors as a forerunner of modern skateboard culture and fashion.
