99 (formerly 99Taxi) is a prominent Brazilian technology company founded in 2012 by Ariel Lambrecht, Renato Freitas, and Paulo Veras. Originally launched as a taxi-hailing service in São Paulo, it quickly expanded its portfolio to include private car rides (99Pop) and food delivery services. The brand became Brazil's first 'unicorn' startup, signifying a valuation of over one billion dollars.
In 2018, the Chinese ride-sharing giant DiDi Chuxing acquired 99, integrating it into its global network of mobility services. Although the brand maintains its headquarters in São Paulo and focuses on the Brazilian market, its ultimate ownership and technological backing reside with the DiDi group in China. The application is developed and maintained primarily through engineering hubs in Brazil and China, serving millions of users across South America.
