Gretsch is a legendary brand in the music industry, particularly renowned for its drums and guitars. Founded in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch, a German immigrant in Brooklyn, New York, the company has a long history of craftsmanship. While the 'Gretsch Sound' became a staple in jazz, rock, and country music during the 20th century, the brand has seen several shifts in ownership and distribution over the decades.
Currently, Gretsch Drums are managed and manufactured under a worldwide license agreement by Drum Workshop (DW Drums). This partnership ensures that high-end 'USA Custom' lines continue to be handcrafted in Ridgeland, South Carolina, while other series are produced in specialized facilities in Taiwan and China to reach a broader market. In 2022, Drum Workshop itself was acquired by Roland Corporation, placing the ultimate ownership of the Gretsch drum brand under the Japanese electronic musical instrument giant.
