Originally developed by the Swedish Tobacco Monopoly (Svenska Tobaksmonopolet), the brand transitioned through various corporate restructures as the Swedish tobacco market was deregulated. For many years, it was managed by Swedish Match, a prominent Swedish multinational company.

In the late 1990s, the brand was acquired by Austria Tabak, which was subsequently taken over by Gallaher Group. Today, John Silver is owned by Japan Tobacco International (JTI). While the brand maintains its distinct Swedish heritage and characteristic high-tar/unfiltered reputation, manufacturing for European markets like Sweden is typically centralized in large-scale facilities in countries such as Poland or Germany, rather than staying localized to Sweden.
