KitKat is a chocolate-covered wafer bar confection created by Rowntree's of York in the United Kingdom. Originally launched in 1935 as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp, the product was renamed KitKat in 1937. The brand has grown to become an international icon, known for its distinctive 'break' and catchy marketing slogan 'Have a break, have a KitKat'.
While the brand originated in the UK, it was acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé in 1988 during the takeover of Rowntree's. Today, KitKat is produced in numerous countries globally to serve local markets. Significant production facilities exist in the UK, United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, and Germany. In the United States, KitKat is manufactured under license by The Hershey Company due to a long-standing licensing agreement that predates Nestlé's acquisition of the brand.
