Penguin biscuits are a beloved British confectionery icon, consisting of chocolate cream-filled sandwich biscuits covered in a smooth milk chocolate-style coating. Originally introduced in Glasgow in 1932, the brand became famous for the jokes printed on its individual wrappers, encouraging consumers to 'Pick Up a Penguin.'
While the brand was originally a product of William Macdonald & Sons, it eventually became part of the McVitie's portfolio. Today, the products are primarily manufactured at the pladis (formerly United Biscuits) factory in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The facilities maintain a high production volume to satisfy deep-rooted demand across the UK and Ireland.
Ownership has shifted through international mergers in the food industry. Following the acquisition of United Biscuits by the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding, the brand was integrated into pladis, a global snacking company. This ownership structure places the brand under Turkish corporate stewardship while maintaining its British manufacturing heritage and identity.
