BYD, which stands for "Build Your Dreams," was founded in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen, China. Initially starting as a rechargeable battery manufacturer, the company expanded into the automotive industry in 2003 through the acquisition of Qinchuan Automobile. Over the following decades, BYD transformed into a global leader in electric mobility, becoming one of the first manufacturers to commit entirely to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) by ending the production of internal combustion engine vehicles in early 2022.
The brand's manufacturing footprint is centered in China, with major production hubs in Shenzhen, Xi'an, and Changsha. To support its global expansion, BYD has established or is developing manufacturing facilities in Brazil, Thailand, Hungary, and Uzbekistan. A key vertical integrator, BYD is unique among automakers for producing its own semiconductors and proprietary battery technologies, most notably the Blade Battery, which is celebrated for its safety and energy density.
Today, BYD is a publicly traded company on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges. While it maintains a diverse range of shareholders, the company remains under the strategic leadership of its founder. It operates multiple sub-brands, including the luxury brand Yangwang, the professional-grade Fangchengbao, and the premium Denza, positioning itself as a dominant force in the transition to sustainable global transportation.
