Sennheiser is one of the most storied names in the world of high-fidelity audio. Founded in 1945 by Fritz Sennheiser in Germany, the brand initially gained fame for its microphones and laboratory instruments before revolutionizing the personal audio market. For decades, it remained a family-owned enterprise synonymous with German engineering and acoustic precision.
In a significant strategic shift in 2022, the Sennheiser family decided to focus exclusively on their Professional business (Microphones and Business Communication). The Consumer Electronics division, which includes the famous Momentum and HD series headphones, was acquired by Sonova Holding AG. This transition allowed the brand to leverage Sonova's medical-grade hearing tech expertise while maintaining the classic Sennheiser sound signature.
Manufacturing for Sennheiser consumer products is globalized. While high-end professional gear often maintains European production in countries like Germany and Romania, the more mainstream consumer headphones and soundbars are primarily manufactured in China at specialized facilities to maintain global competitiveness. Despite the change in corporate ownership, the brand continues to operate under a long-term licensing agreement that ensures the Sennheiser name remains at the forefront of premium audio.
