Kiehl's began as a single homeopathic pharmacy in 1851 at Third Avenue and East 13th Street in New York City. Founded by John Kiehl, the establishment was later purchased by his apprentice, Morse, who expanded the offerings to include pharmaceutical tonics and the brand's first signature skincare products. For over a century, Kiehl's remained a family-owned business, gaining legendary status for its high-quality ingredients and 'try before you buy' sampling philosophy.

In 2000, the brand was acquired by the French cosmetics giant L'Oréal. Despite this acquisition, Kiehl's has maintained its unique apothecary identity and clinical aesthetic. While the brand is global, a significant portion of its production remains in the United States, specifically in facilities located in Piscataway, New Jersey, and South Brunswick, to serve its worldwide boutique network.
