Esso is one of the most recognized global brands in the oil and gas industry, representing the primary retail brand for Exxon Mobil Corporation. The brand name 'Esso' is a phonetic version of the initials 'S.O.' (Standard Oil), tracing its heritage back to the legendary Standard Oil Company founded by John D. Rockefeller in the United States. Following the 1911 breakup of the Standard Oil trust, the name was eventually adopted by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.
Today, Esso products, including its proprietary Synergy fuels and Mobil-branded lubricants, are produced and refined in numerous facilities worldwide. Its manufacturing and refining operations are typically located near major logistics hubs or domestic markets to serve local demand. The brand represents a significant portion of ExxonMobil's international downstream operations, particularly in Europe, Canada, and the Asia-Pacific region.
In 1999, Exxon and Mobil merged to form ExxonMobil, the world's largest publicly traded international oil and gas company. This corporate parent manages the Esso brand globally. While in the United States the brand was largely phased out in favor of Exxon or Mobil brands due to antitrust restrictions, it remains the flagship retail identity in most international markets. The brand continues to evolve with a focus on fuel efficiency and lower-emission technologies under the governance of its American parent company.
