Kahlúa is a world-renowned coffee liqueur with its roots deeply embedded in Veracruz, Mexico. It was first created in 1936 by Pedro Domecq, utilizing the high-quality Arabica coffee beans grown in the region. The name 'Kahlúa' is said to have ties to the ancient Veracruz Nahuatl language, signifying the heritage of its birthplace. The recipe remains famous for its blend of rum, sugar, and 100% Arabica coffee, making it a staple in cocktails like the White Russian and Espresso Martini.
For much of its history, the brand was associated with the Allied Domecq spirits group. However, following the acquisition of Allied Domecq in 2005, the brand transitioned to the portfolio of Pernod Ricard, a French spirits giant. Today, while the ownership is French, the soul and production of Kahlúa remain in Mexico, where it continue to be manufactured primarily using local ingredients to maintain its authentic flavor profile.
