Gomes da Costa, the brand behind the '88' line, was established in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1954 by the entrepreneur Rubem Gomes da Costa. The brand quickly became a leader in the Brazilian canned fish market. In 2004, the company was acquired by the Spanish multinational Grupo Calvo, a family-owned business specializing in canned fish production.
The '88' brand is historically recognized in Brazil as a more accessible, value-oriented line of canned fish compared to the premium Gomes da Costa labels. Today, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Grupo Calvo, which manages extensive manufacturing operations in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil, one of the largest tuna processing facilities in the world. While the production is heavily centered in Brazil to serve the local market, the parent company operates globally with facilities in Spain and El Salvador.
