High School DxD began as a Japanese light novel series written by Ichiei Ishibumi and illustrated by Miyama-Zero, first published by Fujimi Shobo under their Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint in 2008. The series was later adapted into a popular anime television series produced by the animation studio TNK for its first three seasons, and later Passione for the fourth.

Ownership of the franchise remains central to the Kadokawa Corporation, as Fujimi Shobo is a brand of Kadokawa Future Publishing. While various production committees involve side partners for music and distribution (such as Pony Canyon or Marvelous), the intellectual property is firmly rooted in Japan. The franchise has expanded globally through licensing agreements with distributors like Crunchyroll and Funimation to reach international audiences.
