Dinosaur Age and Extinction (Scientific/Educational Topic)

The dinosaur age, known as the Mesozoic Era, spanned approximately 180 million years, divided into the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. It began around 252 million years ago following the Great Dying mass extinction. During this era, dinosaurs evolved from small bipedal reptiles into the diverse array of giants and specialists that dominated global ecosystems. The era was characterized by a warmer climate than today and the gradual breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea into the continents we recognize now.

The extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs occurred approximately 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event. Most scientific evidence points to the impact of a massive asteroid in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, as the primary catalyst. This impact triggered immediate disasters like tsunamis and wildfires, followed by a 'nuclear winter' effect where dust and soot blocked sunlight, collapsing food chains. While non-avian dinosaurs perished, avian dinosaurs survived and evolved into modern birds.
