The Mexicano is a iconic Dutch snack originally created in 1984 by the De Vries food company. Despite its name, it has no direct culinary ties to Mexico; it was designed as a spicy, uniquely shaped rib-style meat snack to stand out in Dutch 'frituur' snack bars.
Today, the brand is owned by De Vries Van Oers, which is part of the Van Geloven group. Since 2016, Van Geloven has been a subsidiary of the Canadian multinational frozen food giant McCain Foods. The product remains a staple of the Benelux snacking culture and is primarily manufactured in the Netherlands.
