Bertolli Olive Oil Spread is a vegetable fat spread containing 10% olive oil, designed as a healthier alternative to butter. The Bertolli brand itself finds its heritage in Italy, where Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina opened a grocery store in Lucca, Tuscany, in 1865. While the brand remains synonymous with Italian culinary tradition, current production for its spreads takes place across several European facilities to serve local markets.
Following a series of corporate acquisitions, the spread division of Bertolli was sold by Unilever to KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P.) in 2018. The spreads are now managed by the Flora Food Group (formerly known as Upfield). Today, while the olive oil side of the brand is owned by Deoleo, the margarine and spreads are part of the world's largest plant-based food company, headquartered in the Netherlands.
