Nikka Whisky is one of Japan's most prestigious spirits brands, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, who is widely regarded as the 'father of Japanese whisky.' After studying the craft in Scotland, Taketsuru returned to Japan and eventually established his own company, Dainippon Kaju Co., Ltd., which later became Nikka. The brand's history is deeply rooted in traditional Scottish distillation methods, which Taketsuru adapted to the Japanese climate.
The production of Nikka products primarily takes place at two iconic Japanese distilleries: Yoichi in Hokkaido and Miyagikyo in Sendai. However, some expressions within the Nikka portfolio are considered 'World Blends,' incorporating spirits distilled in other locations, including the company's Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland. This international collaboration ensures a diverse range of flavor profiles that maintain the brand's high standards for complexity and balance.
Today, Nikka Whisky is a key subsidiary of Asahi Group Holdings, a global leader in the beverage industry. As part of the Asahi portfolio, Nikka has expanded its international footprint, becoming a staple in bars and liquor stores worldwide. The brand remains committed to its founder's vision of quality, utilizing unique methods like coal-fired distillation at the Yoichi site to produce its signature bold and smoky character.
