Red Bull was founded in the mid-1980s by Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz. The concept was inspired by a Thai functional drink called Krating Daeng, which Mateschitz discovered during his travels. Working with the beverage's creator, Chaleo Yoovidhya, he modified the formula to appeal to Western tastes and launched Red Bull in Austria in 1987. This event effectively created the global energy drink category as we know it today.
While Red Bull is a dominant global brand, its production remains highly centralized. The majority of the world's Red Bull supply is manufactured in Austria and Switzerland. The company utilizes a 'wall-to-wall' production model in many of its facilities, where the cans are manufactured and filled in the same location to reduce transport emissions and increase efficiency. Depending on specific regional markets, localized production may occur, but the core concentrate is traditionally associated with Alpine water sources.
Red Bull GmbH is the entity behind the brand, headquartered in Fuschl am See, Austria. Ownership has historically been divided between the Mateschitz family and the Yoovidhya family. Following the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022, his son Mark Mateschitz inherited his 49% stake. The Yoovidhya family of Thailand continues to hold a 51% majority share, making Red Bull an Austro-Thai partnership. The brand is renowned for its intensive marketing through extreme sports and Formula One racing, which has secured its place as the market leader in the energy drink industry.
