iDEAL payment service (integrating with Wero)

iDEAL is the most widely used online payment method in the Netherlands, originally developed by Currence in 2005 to facilitate direct real-time bank transfers. It allows consumers to pay through their own bank's online banking environment. Recently, iDEAL has been undergoing a significant transformation.

In 2023, iDEAL was acquired by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a consortium of major European banks. This move is part of a broader strategy to create a unified European payment system known as Wero. As part of this evolution, iDEAL is being integrated with the Wero digital wallet to provide a seamless cross-border payment experience across Europe. While the service is digital and doesn't have a traditional 'manufacturing' location, its technological infrastructure and governance have historically been centered in the Netherlands, now expanding across the Eurozone under EPI's leadership headquartered in Belgium.
