Suunto was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish adventurer and surveyor who invented a mass-production method for liquid-filled compasses. For decades, the brand became synonymous with precision instruments for diving, training, and outdoor exploration. While headquarted in Vantaa, Finland, the brand remains committed to its Nordic heritage, with many of its premium products still being manufactured in its flagship factory in Finland.
Over the years, the brand transitioned from professional instruments to digital sports technology. In 2022, Suunto underwent a major change in ownership when it was acquired from Amer Sports by Liesheng, a Chinese technology company specializing in smart wearable electronics. This acquisition integrated Suunto into a broader ecosystem of consumer electronics while allowing it to maintain its design and heritage operations in Finland. Today, Suunto continues to be a leader in the outdoor sport and diving communities under the umbrella of its parent company, Liesheng.
