Marlboro is one of the most recognizable cigarette brands globally, known for its iconic 'Marlboro Man' advertising and classic red and white packaging. The brand traces its origins back to a shop on Bond Street in London in the mid-19th century, founded by Philip Morris. It was later introduced in the United States in the 1920s, initially marketed to women before its historic repositioning in the 1950s as a rugged masculine product.
Today, the brand is owned and manufactured by two main entities depending on the region. In the United States, Philip Morris USA, a subsidiary of Altria Group, holds the rights and handles domestic production. For all international markets outside the United States, including the Netherlands (where the packaging in the image originated, as evidenced by the Dutch health warning 'Roken verstopt uw slagaderen'), the brand is owned and distributed by Philip Morris International (PMI). International manufacturing occurs in various facilities worldwide to meet regional demand, with significant production centers located in Europe and Asia.
The packaging shown is a '3XL' or bulk pack variant, standard for the European market, featuring mandated graphic health warnings. Since the spin-off of Philip Morris International from Altria in 2008, the two companies have operated independently while sharing the brand name.
