Unlike many of its competitors, FTDNA focuses heavily on Y-DNA and mtDNA testing, which allows users to trace direct paternal and maternal ancestral lines.

The brand was founded by Bennett Greenspan and Max Blankfeld. For two decades, it operated under the parent company Gene by Gene. In 2021, Gene by Gene merged with the Australian-based medical technology company myDNA. Under this ownership, the brand continues to serve the global genealogy community with a focus on privacy and scientific accuracy. The merger combined FamilyTreeDNA's extensive genealogical database with myDNA's expertise in pharmacogenomics and personalized health informatics, aiming to provide a more holistic view of genetic data for consumers.
