Côte d'Or is one of Belgium's most iconic chocolate brands, founded in 1883 by Charles Neuhaus. The name, which translates to 'Gold Coast,' refers to what is now Ghana, the primary source of the cocoa beans used in the original recipe. The brand is instantly recognizable by its signature elephant logo, which symbolizes the African origins of its cocoa.
Over its long history, the brand transitioned from a family-owned Belgian business to a global player. It was acquired by Jacobs Suchard in 1987, which eventually became part of Kraft Foods. In 2012, when Kraft Foods split into two companies, Côte d'Or became a key brand within Mondelēz International. While it remains deeply rooted in Belgian heritage and maintains significant production facilities in Belgium (such as the Halle plant), its products are distributed worldwide and manufacturing occurs in several European countries to meet global demand.
