Thomson is a historic brand name in the global electronics market with roots tracing back to the late 19th century in France. Originally founded as Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston, the brand became a titan of European technology throughout the 20th century, specializing in broadcasting equipment and consumer appliances.
Today, the Thomson brand is managed through a complex global licensing system. While the brand is historically French, the consumer electronics division, particularly televisions, underwent significant ownership changes in the early 2000s. The brand name is currently owned by Technicolor SA (formerly known as Thomson SA), but the rights to manufacture and sell Thomson-branded televisions were largely licensed to TCL Technology, a major Chinese electronics corporation. More recently, in Europe, the brand for TV and audio products is licensed to companies like StreamView GmbH.
Manufacturing of Thomson products occurs across several locations globally to serve regional markets. Most television assembly takes place in large-scale facilities in China, Poland, and Egypt. This decentralized production allows the brand to remain competitive in the budget and mid-range consumer electronics segments while maintaining a presence in the European market where it remains a household name.
