Trappist Westvleteren is one of the world's most prestigious and exclusive beers, produced within the walls of the Saint-Sixtus Abbey in Vleteren, Belgium. The brewing tradition at this location dates back to 1838, and the beer remains one of the few internationally recognized Trappist ales. The production is overseen entirely by the monks themselves, with the primary goal of providing for the abbey's maintenance and supporting their charitable works.
Unlike most commercial breweries, Westvleteren maintains a strict policy of small-batch production and does not use traditional bottle labels for several of its varieties; most identifying information is instead found on the bottle cap. This scarcity, combined with the abbey's refusal to mass-produce or distribute through standard retail channels, has given the brand a legendary status among beer connoisseurs. The brewery is a non-profit entity, ensuring that all proceeds remain within the monastic community or are donated to those in need.
