The Nissan Xterra is a specialized compact SUV that gained a cult following for its rugged, off-road design. It was originally introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year, named after the XTERRA triathlon race series. The vehicle was designed to target an active, outdoor lifestyle, featuring a unique stepped roofline and a stadium-style seating arrangement.

The brand originated with the Nissan Motor Company of Japan, which sought to capture the growing niche market for true body-on-frame SUVs in North America. Throughout its lifespan, most Xterra units for the North American market were manufactured at Nissan's Smyrna assembly plant in Tennessee. The model was also produced in Brazil for the South American market. Today, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., which operates as part of the global Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. Despite being discontinued in many markets by 2015, the Xterra legacy continues through various successor models in international regions.
