Snus is a traditional moist powder tobacco product that originated in Sweden during the 18th century. Unlike other forms of smokeless tobacco, such as American dipping tobacco, snus is typically pasteurized rather than fermented, which significantly reduces the levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines. It is traditionally placed under the upper lip and does not require spitting.
The global snus market is dominated by Swedish Match, a company that has defined the quality standards (GOTHIATEK) for the industry for decades. While the product is deeply rooted in Swedish culture, the brand landscape has seen significant consolidation, notably with the acquisition of Swedish Match by Philip Morris International in 2022. This shift moved the ultimate ownership of many leading snus brands from Stockholm to the United States. Today, while manufacturing remains heavily focused in Sweden for authenticity and quality, the distribution and corporate governance are managed by global tobacco giants.
